Bankstown residents have been given their first glimpse of the $2 billion state-of-the-art hospital set to transform the suburb’s skyline.

The first designs of the new Bankstown Hospital have been unveiled this week, with the multistorey facility delivering a major expansion of emergency, surgical, maternity and specialist services for the growing region.

Construction of the new hospital is set to start next year and is expected to be complete by late 2031.

Plans to develop the new facility have been more than six years in the making, with the project plagued with cost blowouts.

The Minns government added an additional $700 million in the June budget to allow the project to move forward after high inflation and construction costs overran the hospital’s initial $1.3 billion budget.

The new designs show light-filled upper level wards with panoramic views with additional green space surrounding the building.

The hospital is still in the early planning stage, with more than 1000 staff, patients and locals contributing feedback on the designs.

Health Minister Ryan Park said there would be further opportunities in the coming months for the community to give feedback on the designs.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but we’re getting on with the job to deliver this world-class health facility, tailored to address the future health care needs of the growing Bankstown community,” he said.

“Staff and community consultation is an essential part of the planning and design process and I’m so grateful for our hardworking health staff and clinicians who’ve already provided valuable input.”

An existing TAFE campus on the site is in the process of relocating, to enable construction of the new hospital.

The previous Coalition government had been considering building the hospital on an old rubbish tip contaminated with friable asbestos, lead and other hazardous waste.

The Minns government decided to build the Bankstown hospital at the TAFE site instead after five years of delays in deciding where it should be constructed.
