Outspoken conservative senator Matt Canavan will fight for the leadership of the Nationals party as both arms of the Coalition prepare to fight it out over leadership.

Mr Canavan is expected to throw his hat in the ring on Monday against Nationals leader David Littleproud.

He joins Queensland MP Colin Boyce who multiple Nationals sources said was calling colleagues to win their support.

Multiple Nationals sources maintained they would stand behind Mr Littleproud, citing the party’s ability to hold onto its lower house vote.

The Nationals have faced a tumultuous week with Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price defecting to the Liberals on Thursday.

Her decision coupled with the likely loss of deputy leader Perin Davey in the upper house will mean the Nationals fail to meet the major party status in the Senate when Ms Davey leaves in July.

The deputy leader role is likely to attract a few candidates, but they remained coy as of Friday afternoon.
