What do you get when you combine emerging fashion designers and cutting edge DJs into one? MODA Fashion Festival, of course.
Next Saturday, emerging designer Tasman Banks will join the event line-up, debuting her collection Guardian Angel, steeped in emotion, memory, and transformation.
“The inspiration came from my friend’s mum, an artist who passed away,” Banks said.
“ She always supported my designs.
“One of her artworks is printed on a coat and dress which sort of sparked this whole collection. She’s my guardian angel.”
Her show will unfold in three movements: a tribute to loss, a meditation on impostor syndrome, and, finally, a triumphant emergence of self.
“It’s about pushing through doubt and stepping into your own identity,” Banks said.
Part of what makes MODA distinct in Sydney’s night-life is its unapologetic fusion of fashion and sound. Each runway show is scored live by DJs, who bring their own sonic identity to the designer’s world.
It’s an atmosphere where creatives merge identities.
“The DJ I’m working with has this really techno-alien vibe,” Banks said.
“Their art is totally different from mine.
“But I also love that because it will bring discomfort to the comfortable. So I’m really excited to showcase this.”
As MODA approaches, Banks feels a rare sense of calm. “The run-up to MODA has actually been really fun and relaxing,” she said.
But beyond the clothes and music, she’s clear: MODA isn’t just a platform, it’s a lifeline for Sydney’s night-life.
“We need more spaces like this. There’s almost no support for us in Sydney, outside of a few events,” she said.
“I recently travelled abroad, and it amazes me how other cities are built upon the creative scene. I would love to see that same support embedded into our night-life.”
MODA wants to change that.
“By reclaiming the night and putting emerging talent front and centre, the festival proves that culture isn’t just a luxury.
“It’s an economic and social driver, a win-win.”
