Two men jumped to the aid of a motorcyclist using their shirts to smother flames that had engulfed the injured man’s body following fiery crash in Sydney’s southwest.
Just before 10pm on Thursday, emergency services responded to reports of a motorcycle crashing into a tree near the intersection of Goondah St and Coolalie St in Villawood.
Upon impact, the motorcycle burst into flames.
The rider and sole occupant – a 29-year-old man – suffered serious burns. A number of nearby residents rushed to his aid, extinguishing the flames on his body and providing first aid until emergency services arrived.
Video has emerged of the man lying on the ground as two men tried to extinguish the blaze.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition. He has since been placed into an induced coma.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, with the motorcycle left extensively damaged.
Officers established a crime scene, which was later examined by specialist police.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is underway, with initial inquiries indicating the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with information about the incident – or anyone who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage from the area – to contact Bankstown Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
