A major manhunt is under way after a man was found stabbed in the neck on the footpath outside a south Sydney unit block, described by residents as a “horrifying” place.
Police set up a crime scene on Maloney St in Eastlakes early on Monday afternoon, with local detectives and specialist investigators from the homicide squad now leading a murder probe.
In a statement, NSW Police said emergency services had been called to the scene about 12.20pm.
“NSW Ambulance paramedics assisted the man; however, he died at the scene,” police said.
“He is yet to be formally identified.”
The crime scene has been established in an area behind a housing commission building, where residents told The Daily Telegraph they had heard “a commotion” just before midday.
A resident of five years, said she was inside her level two apartment when she heard a commotion between “maybe two or three people” with a woman yelling “move, move”.
“Before the ambulances arrived I heard a lot noisy fighting, a woman was screaming, shouting loudly “move, move, but I heard a man’s voice as well.”
“It’s not really anything out of the ordinary, this building is very noisy with yelling at midnight so we’re very used to it.”
Another resident of 40 years, Madeleine said detectives were combing through the unit block, stopping residents on every floor to ask questions.
“We had detectives coming and stopping everyone to ask if they know the person
“Neighbours are talking with one another but we can’t do anything because we don’t know what he looks like.”
Madeleine said she was traumatised this happened in the middle of the day.
“It’s very sad, I’m traumatised to be honest, there are good families in here who just keep to themselves.”
Another woman, who called an ambulance, said the noise had woken her from a nap.
She heard a number of voices, including that of a male saying “get the dog, get the dog”.
“It’s horrifying living here,” the woman said, claiming people who did not live in the building used it to store drugs.
“It’s crazy, but you’ll expect an incident to happen at least once a month.”
A mother of three, who lives in the building and also wished to remain anonymous, said she was “not surprised” about the incident.
She said yelling and fights were a regular occurrence in the area, so much so that it was not safe to go out at night.
Other locals made similar comments and said they had submitted various complaints to Housing NSW.
Police have urged witnesses or anyone with information to contact South Sydney police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
