Lake Macquarie man, 35, to front court on attempted murder charge after alleged suffocation attempt

A Lake Macquarie man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to suffocate an elderly man. Police say the pair are known to one another.

A Lake Macquarie man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to suffocate an elderly man.

Police will allege at about 10.30am on Tuesday, a 35-year-old man allegedly attempted to suffocate a 71-year-old man known to him at a home at Macquarie Hills.

The elderly man managed to leave the residence and was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Lake Macquarie Police were later notified of the alleged murder attempt and launched an investigation.

Following inquiries, the alleged offender was arrested at a home on Taranaki Place at Macquarie Hills, shortly after 5am on Wednesday.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station where he was charged with attempt to strangle/suffocate with intent to murder (DV).

He was refused bail and is expected to appear before Belmont Local Court on Thursday.
