A Newport-based entrepreneurial “vlogger” is building an online cult following for his travel tip videos pointing out the quirky highlights, “hidden gems” and history of the northern beaches to visitors.
Jordon Clark pumps out his popular narrated walking tour video logs (vlogs) through the PoppetAdventures YouTube channel he set up as part of his passion for film making.
The 31-year-old, who was diagnosed with autism as a child, came up with the idea of creating the YouTube vlogs while stuck at home during the Covid pandemic.
He credits the YouTube channels and reviews with helping with his autism.
“Before this, I’d always prefer to be by myself,” he said.
“It helped me learn skills to survive, skills to be able to talk to people.
“If you don’t make a noise, no one is going to know who you are.”
Jordon’s first YouTube channels, under the heading PoppetProductions, featured review channels for pinball machines, video games arcades, heavy metal music gigs and rugby league matches. He set up more than 10 YouTube chanels including ThePinballJunkee93.
But once the Covid community restrictions were lifted, he wanted to branch out into travel tips.
Jordon takes his online subscribers to more than 30 locations including Dee Why Beach, Brookvale, his home suburb of Newport and Terrey Hills. The vlogs run for an average of four to five minutes.
He even branched out into vlogs on his beloved Brookvale Oval — he’s a lifetime Manly NRL Sea Eagles fan — Warringah Mall, Chatswood and Darling Harbour.
His YouTube channels have had thousands of views from across Australia and around the world.
“I kept trying to come up with ideas that appeal to lots of people,” Jordon said.
“That PoppetAdventures idea came up and it just took off.”
Jordon, who went to Pittwater High School and had a massive interest in computers, devotes most of his time to filming and editing material for his channels, or travelling to destinations, via public transport, to make the vlogs.
“It’s more than full-time, work, it’s a passion,” he said.
