A man accused of bashing a 39-year-old and leaving him to die with extensive injuries in a gutter on the Qld-NSW border will front court.

At about 3:15am last Sunday, emergency services were called to William St at Tweed Heads South after a man was found unconscious near the roadway.

Police attended and found the man, however, despite medical intervention from paramedics he died at the scene.

The victim has since been identified as a 39-year-old Tweed Heads man.

Police established a crime scene and launched an investigation with the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad under Strike Force Mantung.

Following investigations, strike force detectives along with Tweed Heads Police arrested a 48-year-old man in Kirra on the Queensland border at 3.30pm on Saturday.

He was taken to Southport where he was then extradited to New South Wales and charged with assault causing death at Tweed Heads Police Station.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.

Neighbours rattled after bashing victim dies in gutter

November 24: Residents of a “quiet” street on the Queensland-New South Wales border have been left “shaken up” after the victim of a bashing died in a gutter, sparking a manhunt for a killer.

The man in his 30s was found lying unconscious on the side of William St, Tweed Heads South by a resident about 3.15am on Sunday.

NSW Police confirmed later in the day that the victim suffered serious head injuries.

Tweed/Byron Police District officers and NSW Ambulance paramedics rushed to help, but the man died at the scene.

Police set up a crime scene and said the man had not been formally identified.

Investigations into the incident continue and local police have been aided by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad detectives.

NSW Police Superintendent Michael Dempsey told media at the weekend that detectives believed there was an altercation not far from where the man died.

Supt Dempsey said police believed there was one person responsible, rather than a group.

One William St resident, who asked not to be named, said those living in the “usually quiet” street were “shaken up” following the death.

“We thought it was someone who had a medical episode, but when we found out it may have been a murder it made us quite scared,” he told this publication on Monday.

“I was woken up by sirens and looked out the window to see paramedics working on the guy … you know, trying to bring him back from the dead basically.”

The resident said the man was laying on a narrow strip of grass between the roadway and a three-storey block of units at 12 William St.

Concerned residents took to social media in the wake of the death and said they witnessed a large number of police and other emergency services on scene.

Michelle Weber wrote on Facebook: “I was woken up this morning at about 4am by a lot of police and ambulance lights on my street.”

The police have been there ever since, they have blocked the street and taped it off so avoid William Street in South Tweed … don’t know what happened … but hope everyone is OK,” she said.

Suzanne Landers added: “This street is at the back of the housing commission which is between Lloyd and William streets.”

She also claimed “every night there are people fighting and banging on the door of one particular unit. This goes on at least six nights a week between 8pm and 5am”.

“There’s screaming and shouting. I’ve no doubt whatsoever drugs are being sold from this unit.

“Can’t believe there haven’t been more assaults resulting in death in this area.”

Anyone with more information should contact Tweed Heads police, or phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
