A Range Rover has been set alight in a “suspicious” firebombing attack, just a few houses down from the former residence of a headline-making drug importer.
Fire crews were called to Dolans Rd at Burraneer, in Sydney’s south, about 5am on Sunday, after the black SUV parked in the driveway of a home was set alight in the dead of night.
CCTV footage shows two men with their faces covered and hoods on running up to the car and smashing a window.
They could then be seen pouring an accelerant from the car up to the front door of the home, before returning to set it alight.
While the car was damaged by the fire, thankfully the blaze failed to spread to the home.
It is understood that a cigarette lighter was found in the yard of a home two doors up, with the home taped off by NSW Police on Sunday morning.
That home previously belonged to convicted drug importer Matthew Doyle, who was sentenced to a minimum of five years jail in 2020.
That came after the socialite pleaded guilty to commercial drug supply over a 300kg cocaine importation, but he was released on parole early in 2024.
There is no suggestion that Doyle, or the new residents of his former home, had involvement in the firebombing.
As the sun rose on the crime scene to reveal the damage to the car, a baby seat could be seen sitting in the front yard of the targeted home, which sources said was owned by a local businessman.
In a statement, NSW Police said local detectives had taken up the investigation and believed the incident was “suspicious”.
“About 5am today, emergency services were called to a home on Dolans Road, Burraneer, following reports of a fire,” the statement said.
“Officers attached to Sutherland Shire Police Area Command arrived and were told a car had been set alight before the owner extinguish the blaze.
“Police have established a crime scene and have launched an investigation into the incident. Following initial inquires, police are treating the fire as suspicious.”
