Four teenagers accused of gang raping a 17-year-old girl in Sydney’s west over a six-hour period allegedly filmed snippets of the ordeal and shared it among themselves.
More harrowing details of the teen’s alleged sexual assault were revealed as the head of the NSW Police Sex Crimes Squad Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty addressed the media on Wednesday morning.
She said the girl was shopping at Liverpool on December 15 last year, when an unknown 16-year-old boy struck up a conversation with her.
The male then allegedly suggested they go to the girl’s car for a chat, when he is then accused of forcing his way inside the vehicle and sexually assaulting her.
Det-Supt Doherty said the male “video called” friends while he was allegedly raping the girl.
He then allegedly convinced her to drive him to a nearby suburb, assuring her he would leave the vehicle once they got there.
But Det-Supt Doherty said at that location, in Sadleir, it would be alleged two more teenagers got into the vehicle and also sexually assaulted her, before a fourth male arrived in another car and the abuse continued as they drove around the area for several hours.
“The four of them acted together creating fear on the victim … and at times there was more than one person offending against this poor young girl,” Det-Supt Doherty said.
She said the young girl had been incredibly brave and was being supported by her family and professionals, but the affects on her would be lifelong.
“This type of offending will affect her for life,” she said.
Police said the alleged assault ended at 11.30pm that night, and the girl called a friend who took her to Liverpool police station.
Det-Supt Doherty said on December 20, two boys – aged 16 and 14 – were arrested at homes in Condell Park and Miller.
The 16-year-old was charged with 24 offences, including nine counts of sexual intercourse without consent, and multiple counts of aggravated sexual.
On the same day, Strike force detectives also arrested a 14-year-old boy at a home in Miller.
The boy was taken to Liverpool police station, where he was charged with 10 offences including seven counts of aggravated sex assault; aggravated sexual assault in company and inflict actual bodily harm.
Both were refused bail and appeared in a children’s court the following day.
Det-Supt Doherty said police knew there were two other males allegedly involved, and assured the community there was never any risk of reoffending while detectives worked on the investigation.
“Community safety is always our highest priority, and immediately after the incident, strike force investigators put a number of strategies in place to closely monitor the alleged offenders and prevent opportunities for further offending, before arrests could be made,” she said.
Following months of inquiries, police executed two search warrants on Tuesday in Sadleir and Heckenberg.
In Sadleir, police arrested an 18-year-old man. He was taken to Liverpool police station, where he was charged with nine counts of aggravated sex assault – offender in company with other persons.
He was refused bail to appear in a children’s court on Wednesday.
At the Heckenberg arrest, police arrested a 19-year-old man — Adam Abdul-Hamid — who was taken to Liverpool Police Station, where he was charged with five counts of aggravated sex assault.
He was refused bail to appear in Liverpool Local Court Wednesday.
