Despite the current cost-of-living crisis, Australians will splash out $860 million on Father’s Day gifts this year.
Research by the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and Roy Morgan shows 35 per cent plan to buy a gift for father figures, spending an average of $112 per person.
Food and alcohol will be the most popular gifts, followed by clothing and shoes, and books, music and games. More than a fifth will purchase gifts for someone other than their birth father.
ARA CEO Paul Zahra says Father’s Day is a gift-giving event centred around giving back.
“We find that when shoppers are showing appreciation for loved ones, they are more likely to splash out,” he says. “This is a very social family event with barbecues and gatherings proving a very popular way to celebrate the occasion.
“It’s an important milestone to celebrate the immense contribution of dads and the sacrifices they make, but many Australians also take the opportunity to show their appreciation for their partners, grandfathers, caregivers and other family members.”
New research by RedBalloon revealed 56 per cent of Aussies agree that the best gifts are ones that can be shared together. Two in five prefer experiences to product gifts.
While Bunnings research shows gift cards, clothing and alcohol are the top picks.
From practical vouchers to tech products, these are the top gifts for every father figure.
