A drunk 41-year-old cattle farmer terrorised residents with a chainsaw after crashing a ute into a Dorrigo property on Australia Day, a Coffs Harbour court has heard.
Irvine Martin leant his head and arms through an open window of a home while wielding the live chainsaw during the rampage
Martin from Dorrigo drank a bottle of Wild Turkey whiskey before he drove along Hickory Street, where he swerved off the road and went into a residential property.
The ute smashed through the fence into a second property and crashed into a house.
Martin grabbed the chainsaw out of the tray of his ute and used it on a pine tree on the property.
A resident was about 20 metres away and asked Martin: “What the f*ck are you doing?”
Martin pointed the live chainsaw at her before he leaned through the window of the home and cut the window frame.
Martin’s menacing behaviour continued and he returned to cutting down the tree, until the chainsaw became jammed.
He managed to remove the chainsaw with a wedge and took off in his car.
Police arrested Martin at a Paddys Plains Road property in North Dorrigo on January 29.
Martin was sentenced in Coffs Harbour Local Court on Tuesday for common assault, stalking and intimidating, damaging property, going armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and entering a building or land with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Martin was supported in the court by two sisters and his brother-in-law.
His defence lawyer told the court they would assist him to remain sober when he is released from Clarence Correctional Centre.
The solicitor said Martin understood his future was on the line and his client’s misadventures had led to the sale of most of his Angus cattle, leaving only 20 remaining.
Magistrate Theresa Hamilton sentenced Martin to 18 months in prison.
He will be eligible for release on parole on November 28, considering time already served.
