Jewish MP Julian Leeser has been the target of anti-Semitic graffiti after his election posters were defaced overnight with a Hitler moustache and devil horns.
Members of Mr Leeser’s team discovered the graffitied posters on Saturday morning in Epping, within his electorate of Berowra in northern Sydney.
Mr Leeser, who has been a vocal advocate and defender of the Jewish community throughout his career, said the graffiti was “deeply offensive” but did not represent the “community I know and love”.
He also said this was “not the first time” he had been attacked with anti-Semitic graffiti.
“There is nothing clever or original in images suggesting Jews have horns. In fact, it is a hate filled idea, harking back to the Middle Ages,” he said.
“Drawing Hitler moustaches on the face of Jewish people is just deeply offensive.
“This behaviour does not reflect the community I know and love and have had the privilege of serving for nearly nine years.“
Mr Leeser said the attack, which comes after an “explosion” of hate in the last 18 months, had “no place in our country”.
In the same breath, he vowed the attacks “don’t intimidate me.“
“These attacks only make me and my supporters more determined to redouble our efforts to win this election so I can continue delivering for our community,” he said.
NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Ossip called the attack “reprehensible”.
“Sadly, this is the latest instance of hate-filled vandalism infecting our polity,” he said.
“No candidate for political office should be attacked on the basis of their religion, race or other immutable characteristic.”
The Saturday Telegraph understands Mr Leeser has reported the incident to NSW Police.
