A lawyer with a passion for beer making is leading a push for a new microbrewery and bar on the northern beaches — the Justice Brewing Co.

David Mitchell, the principal at Mitchell & Shorten Lawyers, wants to set up the business with the logo “let justice be served’ in the legal firm’s North Manly premises.

The brewing plant, and bar to accommodate 30 patrons, would be set up in an industrial unit on the ground floor of the unassuming red brick commercial building that stretches between Girard St and Pittwater Rd.

Mr Mitchell, from North Balgowlah, would continue to operate the legal firm, which specialises in building law, on a mezzanine level at the back of premises.

It would share the mezzanine with a branding, web design agency, Juuce Creative.

A development application for the business has been lodged with Northern Beaches Council.

If approved, Justice Brewing Co. would open in the building alongside other commercial tenants including a bike shop and a glass design studio.

Details of the proposal, contained in a statement of environmental effects report, include a brewhouse, a bar, which would also sell takeaway beers, seating for customers that includes an outdoor deck with tables and stools.

The bar would open seven days a week. Monday to Thursday it would operate from 4pm to 10pm. On Saturdays, the bar would welcome customers from noon to midnight while on Sundays and public holidays, hours would be restricted from noon to 8pm. The deck would only open until 10pm.

“The proposed key hours of operation are typical light industry hours resulting in minimised impact on the neighbouring uses,” the report stated.

“The users of the premises are primarily visiting later in the day and the evenings thus will not impact on traffic flow for neighbouring businesses.

“The site is within a light industrial estate and an ample distance from residential premises.”

There would not be a kitchen on the premises, but some pre-prepared food would be served including pies, bags of chips, cheeses and cold meat platters.

Mr Mitchell, who has a certificate in brewing from TAFE, said his love of home brewing beer was the catalyst for the idea to develop a commercial microbrewing operation with two other business partners from Juuce Creative.

Their aim is to produce 26,000 litres of beer each year.

“I’ve been interested in brewing beer for many years now, so this won’t be a hands off venture for me,” Mr Mitchell said.

“The time is right and the opportunity came up for us to do it.
“We won’t be doing anything funky, no chocolate mudshake IPAs or anything like that.

“It won’t have crazy beers. It’ll very much be a locals-type venue.”

The DA is open for public submissions until July 15.
