The Coffs Coast community is rallying around a local surfer who suffered a catastrophic heart attack at the beach as he battles through intensive care.
Steve Dean, a long time Coffs resident, suffered the heart attack at Macauleys Beach, Coffs Harbour on Monday. It is not clear whether the medical episode happened in the surf.
He is now in ICU with his family – wife Em and children Jet and Neo – by his side, according to a fundraiser set up for the Dean family.
Coffs Harbour Boardriders wrote on social media: “Let’s help this epic human and his family”.
“The Deans are one of the kindest, most humble and supportive families you could meet. “Steve, Em, Neo and Jet are a huge part of our CHBC family and the wider Coffs community.
Let’s rally around them in this tough time. A go fund me has been set up to help support them in the coming weeks and months.
“They are so grateful for all the healing energy and positive vibes you can send their way.”
Friend Adam Percival referred to the medical episode as a “horrific event” and urged the community to donate to the family.
On GoFundMe, the organisers wrote: “We are asking our board riders and wider Coffs community for some financial assistance, to help with Stevie’s recovery.”
“The funds will be a massive help to his wife Em and kids Jet & Neo, whilst Stevie is unable to work.
“The Deans are one of the kindest and supportive families you could meet. They could really use some support at this time. Any donation big or small would be greatly appreciated.”
The fundraiser has notched up more than $6000 in less than 24 hours.
