It was supposed to be a classic boys’ weekend. Two brothers, a footy match and a few drinks in the city.
By sunrise, one was lying in a hospital bed with a shattered jaw. The other was in a police cell, facing serious assault charges.
Jacob Guille, a 36-year-old electrician from Melbourne, fronted Parramatta Local Court on Sunday after a night out in Sydney ended in violence at a Darlinghurst AirBnB.
He and his younger brother, Joshua Guille, 35, had travelled to Sydney to watch the Swans take on Carlton at the SCG on Friday night.
The siblings finished the evening drinking at the Gaslight Inn, a pub right next door to their accommodation on Yurong St, Darlinghurst.
But around 2.30am Saturday, police allege a dispute over their room key escalated into a fight.
A witness told police he emerged from his room to find the brothers grappling on the floor of the shared living area, swinging punches.
Another witness recalled Jacob pleading “We are brothers” and asking him not to call police.
But a security guard at the pub next door did just that.
Officers arrived to find Joshua badly injured, suffering a suspected broken jaw, deep lacerations to his mouth and eye, and extensive bruising. He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Jacob was arrested a short time later on Oxford St. He was taken to Surry Hills Police station where he told police he had no memory of the fight or how his brother was injured.
He was initially charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, which was later upgraded to assault occasioning grievous bodily harm once police were made aware of the severity of his brother Joshua’s injuries.
In court, Jacob appeared visibly shaken and remorseful for his drunken actions. He was sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order.
He was granted bail for him to return home to Victoria.
Joshua Guille was not charged with any wrongdoing.
