Not even cost-of-living pressures will stop people from opening their hearts (and their wallets) for the women who mean everything to them this Mother’s Day.
Australians are set to spend $925 million on gifts this year – up $166 million from 2022 – with flowers, alcohol, food and gift cards topping the list, according to Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and Roy Morgan.
While one fifth will celebrate the occasion with a meal at a restaurant and 38 per cent will spoil mum with a feast at home.
Those who plan on buying a gift will spend an average amount of $92 each, with 84 per cent planning to spend the same or more than they did last year.
“Amid ongoing cost of living pressures, many will be making an exception to spoil their mums – or in some instances other special people in their lives,” ARA chief executive Paul Zahra says.
“We typically see shoppers becoming more selfless. While people may be reluctant to spoil themselves due to the high costs of living, they’re still enthusiastic to splash out on loved ones.”
A new survey by ShopFully Australia revealed 93.8 per cent plan to head in-store to purchase a gift, with 31.9 per cent looking for something that is sentimental and shows love.
ShopFully Australia country manager Brendan Straw says fashion was a hot category, with clothes, shoes and accessories reported as the go-to by almost half of shoppers.
“While Mother’s Day is a highly sentimental occasion, shoppers are keen to purchase a gift that is practical, ensuring it’s needed and will be used often,” he says.
“Beauty, homewares and kitchenware were also among the top categories consumers will be purchasing from.
“Regardless of your budget, retailers have done the work to curate gift options and deals. For those unsure of what to get or that haven’t even thought of it, this is your reminder to check out online catalogues before heading in-store.”
Meanwhile, data by Big W shows the bestselling categories for Mother’s Day are cosmetics, skincare and knitwear.
The retailer expects books and tech will be big winners as “we head into the final days before mum’s big day”.
