A $10 million renovation to three apartment towers in Sydney’s west will allow hundreds of people on the public housing wait list to move in almost immediately.

The unit block, known by locals as “The Three Sisters”, had been sitting empty for more than two years after residents were told to leave in order to make way for a giant new development.

However, the Minns Government decided to rip up the deal with the contractor, and instead refurbish the currently existing 148 public housing units. 240 people will now be able to move in before Christmas.

The upgraded units on Wade Street include new kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and enhanced safety and security systems.

It’s part of the largest investment in housing in the state’s history, as the Minns Government invests a total of $6.6 billion into the Building Homes for NSW package.

Housing Minister Rose Jackson accused the former Coalition Government of “signing a dead deal and leaving these towers empty for years during a housing crisis”.

“We tore that deal up, brought these homes back to life and now we’re getting people housed,” Ms Jackson said.

There are 67,721 applicants for social housing in NSW, with 12,031 declared a “priority” as of last month.

Work will also begin shortly on a separate development in Telopea at Polding Place, which will deliver 423 additional homes.

There are also plans for a new 6,000 square metre community plaza and park with play equipment, sports courts and picnic areas.

Minister Jackson said the Minns Government was “laying the foundations for long-term renewal that will transform Telopea into a thriving community”.
