Northern Territory police are mourning the loss of a senior constable, aged 44, who tragically died on Christmas Day.
For cutural reasons the officer’s name has been withheld.
NT Police commissioner Michael Murphy said the senior constable was spending Christmas Day off duty at Daly River when officers in the area received calls that a man had collapsed.
Mr Murphy said police on scene commenced CPR, and that was when they recognised he was a fellow officer.
“It’s a very sad occasion,” he said.
“I’ve spoken to his partner as well but it’s terribly sad, and our thoughts are with the family and all his colleagues.
“We also wish to reassure the community that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
“Support services are being provided to those within the Northern Territory Police family who have been impacted by this loss.”
For the past 17 years, the officer has been a stalwart in the NT police force, having served in Timber Creek, Tennant Creek, Katherine, and Ali Curung.
NT Police Association thanked the officer for his services.
“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the senior constable’s family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time,” they said.
“Thank you for your service and commitment to the Northern Territory Police Force and the protection of the Northern Territory community over the past 17 years.
“Rest in Peace friend and colleague your shift is done.”
Hundreds of Territorians took to Facebook to share their tributes and memories of the senior constable.
“You were a great squad mate and great guy,” one person said.
“Your loss will be felt sorely … never forget the funny yarns and the cheeky smile.”
Another commenter said the senior constable was always committed to his duties, his colleagues and the community he served.
“A gentleman with a big heart and a good copper, it was a pleasure working with you,” he said.
Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also recognised the officer for his service to the Territory.
“Yesterday, our police force lost a colleague and friend,” she said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with their family, friends, and fellow officers during this very sad time.”
