Alice Springs crime: Lockdown lifted at Alice Springs school as woman arrested

A school is no longer in lockdown in Alice Springs while a woman is in custody, police say; while in an unrelated incident, a bystander has been taken to hospital and a man arrested. Read the latest.

Thursday, December 4, 12.30pm: A bystander has been taken to hospital and a man is custody, arrested in connection to an alleged aggravated assault in Alice Springs, police say.

NT Police said they were called to Bloomfield Street on Wednesday night, following reports of an alleged assault against a woman.

Two bystanders attempted to intervene in the assault, according to police, who said a 29-year-old man – allegedly armed with an “edged weapon” – and another man allegedly assaulted the bystanders.

“The male bystander sustained minor injuries and was conveyed to hospital by police,” police said.

The woman, who was allegedly assaulted, and the second man, who allegedly assaulted the bystanders, “left the scene,” police said.

The 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the alleged assaults but was yet to be charged.

Investigations are continuing, police said, with anyone with information urged to contact police on 131 444.

No reference number was provided by police.

Lockdown lifted at Alice Springs school as woman arrested: Cops

Thursday, December 4, 10am: A lockdown was lifted at a school in Alice Springs, with a woman arrested after allegedly threatening students, police say.

NT Police said the woman, aged 30, was arrested Thursday morning at the school on Blain St.

The school was not named by police, who alleged the woman attended the school in the morning and was threatening students.

While the school was placed into lockdown it was soon lifted.

No students were injured.

The woman is in custody but it is unclear if she has been charged.

Investigations are ongoing, police said.

“There is no further risk to students at the school or the public,” police said.

Man arrested for allegedly ramming minibus which struck woman in Alice: Cops

Tuesday, December 2, 3.30pm: A man who allegedly rammed a minibus after it struck a woman in Alice Springs has been hit with a raft of charges after his arrest, police say.

NT Police said they arrested the 26-year-old man Tuesday morning, after he allegedly used a Mitsubishi Triton to ram a minibus – which had just struck a woman on Commonage Rd.

Police allege a woman – whose age was not provided – walked in front of the minibus prior to being hit, and was taken to hospital for “minor injuries” by an ambulance.

The driver of the minibus stopped to render assistance, police said, when the man arrived in the Triton.

“The occupants of the Triton allegedly threw rocks at the minibus before the Triton allegedly rammed the front of the vehicle,” police said.

“The minibus driver and its occupants left the scene and attended the Alice Springs Police Station.”

Police arrived, arresting the man and charging him with breaching his DVO, driving with a medium BAC, and recklessly endangering serious harm.

The man will appear in court Wednesday.

Police said investigations into what happened are ongoing.

Arson charge laid over ‘suspicious fire’: Cops

Tuesday, December 2, 3.15pm: An arson charge has been laid over a car fire cops are calling a “suspicious” in Alice Springs.

NT Police said they arrested a 21-year-old man on Tuesday over a car fire on Gap Rd.

The car fire occurred Saturday night, and initial investigations by police deemed the fire “suspicious,” police said.

The 21-year-old has been charged with arson and being armed with an offensive weapon, police said.

He is due to appear in the Alice Springs Local Court Wednesday, police said.

Urgent lock-door warning after Alice Springs home invasion

Tuesday, December 2, 1pm: Alice Springs police have called for the public to help themselves and law enforcers by locking security doors and windows to external threats.

The call came early Tuesday morning, just hours after an intruder carrying a machete entered a home occupied by a solitary woman in Lackman Terrace, Braitling through an unlocked door.

Alice Springs acting Watch Commander acting senior sergeant Shawn Hohn said about 8.25pm on Monday, police were notified a home occupied by a 46-year-old woman had been illegally entered.

The woman told police a young Aboriginal male aged about 15 entered her home armed with a machete and demanded the keys to her vehicle.

The youth fled in the woman’s Toyota Corolla and was sighted driving around the town for several hours before the vehicle was found dumped on Sargent Street about 11.30pm.

The vehicle was taken back to the police compound where it was will be forensically examined later in the day, and the youth remained at large.

“This is a reminder of personal and home security,” Sen Sgt Hohn said.

“The woman was unharmed and the vehicle was undamaged.”
