St Mary’s are still in contention for a top three finish in the Men’s Premier League after putting their rivals from across the road, PINT, to the sword.
A win against the Greenants was crucial for Saints to remain in the running for a double chance considering they have a bye and a clash with top side Southern Districts still to come.
And while they weren’t necessarily perfect, Saints got the job done pulling ahead in the second quarter to eventually settle into a 14.12 (96) to 4.2 (26) victory.
The Green Machine were scrappy with their ball usage early in the day unable to take full advantage of chances created by skipper Dylan Landt and an incisive Connor West.
However, their pressure game aided by the inclusion of fly-ins Nate Paredes and Joel Garner allowed an influx of opportunities for their forward line.
It took some time for Saints dominance to be reflected on the scoreboard, but midway through the second quarter the goals finally started flowing.
PINT’s goal kicking woes of recent times had not faded, this time unable to create much in the way of scoring at all.
The Greenants went goalless before halftime against Nightcliff two weeks ago, and while they didn’t have to wait as long for a Chris Nield goal this time around, it was almost as long to their second.
Nield goalled in the first quarter as Saints fumbled and the likes of Thomas Schott and Thomas Reeves took advantage, they only had one other point to their name until Hugh Schmetzer got a major in the third.
Their tendency to play deep played into the hands of the high pressure game Saints love to play and it meant for large periods they found themselves besieged within their own zone.
The Greenants were best served by their defensive setup including Jamie Fulton and Brad Ryan who managed to disrupt Saints’ attempts at goal, but the sheer weight of Saints chances overran them.
When the ball did head Saints way their defence got to flex its muscles and Kieren Parnell was crucial there sending the ball packing back in the direction of his forwards with his strong carries.
Jackson Calder got more involved up forward as the game wore on, while the likes of Jesse Tuohey had a strong outing as well alongside young guns Sem Kuzamba and Thomas Dewsbury.
The fourth quarter was the most confident for Saints, feeding off free kicks as PINT’s discipline failed them and the reigning premiers closed it out on their terms.
“It’s great for us to be finding some form after losing a few over Christmas, particularly in this later stage of the season,” Tuohey said.
“We had them from the second, but we wanted to finish the game well building on form and I think we did that in the end which was good to see.
“Now we just have to keep winning, that’s all we can do at this stage and hopefully finish top three, Districts have been the best team all year and we know that match will be a tough slog.
“Coming to play for St Mary’s has been great, I’ve loved it, it took a bit to get used to the heat, but I’m used to it now and ready to take on finals.”

PREVIEW
St Mary’s have reaffirmed their place in the NTFL top three after a shaky period, but with a bye and a clash against the league leaders ahead this match against PINT is a must-win.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 7.30pm on Saturday.
The reigning premiers have put their four match slump behind them and are once again in position to get a double chance, though the tightness of the league means that’s not a certainty.
Spearhead Jackson Calder surpassed his personal goal scoring record with 11 majors against the Buffaloes last round as Saints cruised to victory.
Skipper Dylan Landt and Connor West were in top form for the occasion and they will need to be at their best through the middle again for their side to secure the win.
PINT return from their bye round to take on the side from across the road, and will be after a strong outing to send off their season on a strong note.
The Greenants won’t feature in finals this season, but can still have an impact with their defensive style often forcing close games.
Thomas Schott and Cameron Wilson have been the sides best through the middle, and while they have some strong players upfront goal scoring has been an issue this season.
If they can shape up well after a re-energising break they may be able to give the Saints some trouble on their path to a top three position.
