The Nightcliff Tigers have given one of their greats a milestone match to remember, crushing the Buffaloes and locking down a top three spot on Saturday.
Their two-time Nichols medal winning captain Brodie Filo was playing in his 150th game for the Tigers that doubled as a match where a shot at another premiership came closer.
The Tigers dominated from the opening minute and didn’t ever lose control of the key battles as they surged to an 18.16 (124) to 3.0 (18).
Nightcliff dominated the midfield where Filo picked up his usual boatload of possessions, while Lachlan Tardrew and Brandan Parfitt played huge roles on the ball.
Nathan Brown and Cam Ilett were among the veterans making a return for the occasion while former Buff Kokwam Niki played his first prems side to lay on hurt for the Tigers this time.
The Buffaloes gave some early contest with hard tackles and the usual contributions of Jarrod Stokes, but they were unable to break through against a tough Tigers defence.
Will Irwin was able to get a goal in the first, but they would only score two other majors for the piece as the Tigers asserted their dominance.
Instead, Nightcliff just settled into a rhythm they maintained for the full four quarters from the ruck work of Kyle Fitzgerald to their 11 different goal scorers.
Stanlet Cox was a particular livewire showing up with some great early marks and scoring, while Sean Hunter continued to show his talents.
Niki scored a belter from the sideline in the second to add to his former side’s pain while a popular third quarter goal from Filo had the whole team surround him.
Nightcliff now go on to face Palmerston in Round 18, a must win in terms of being their last home game of the season and to secure a top three finish.
“It’s unreal to pull up 150 games, I came up about 10 years ago to play one season and I’m still here,” Filo said.
“I love the club, and I’m glad to be here, this week has been a bit overwhelming with the support from friends and family down south and up here, it’s been great.
“This performance was just about playing as a team and we did that in the end, we put more than 100 out there, which shows we did what we needed.
“Next week we have our last home game against Palmerston, we’ll be full strength and hopefully we can keep playing good footy heading into the pointy end of the season.”

PREVIEW
Round 17 will be a big occasion for Nightcliff with skipper Brodie Filo set to bring up game 150 for the Tigers as they push to confirm a finals double chance against the Darwin Buffaloes.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 4pm on Saturday.
Filo has been an integral part of the Tigers squad in his tenure, winning two Nichols medals, and playing a key role in the side’s premiership three-peat.
He has again been a ball magnet throughout the 2024-25 season, winning clearance battle after clearance battle to put his side on the front foot as they set their sights on a second placed finish.
The Tigers currently sit in second but with their remaining games being against bottom sides Buffaloes and Palmerston they are in a favourable position for a double chance.
Nightcliff have been among the form sides in the competition in recent months with a loss to top side Districts the only blemish on their record since the break.
The Buffaloes have had plenty to be happy about in recent weeks going from a winless pre-Christmas team to beating both Wanderers and Palmerston in recent weeks.
Defender Bradley Stokes has been a powerhouse throughout that time, while Jarrod Stokes and Tom Simpson have paired up well through the middle to bring the battle to their opposition.
They’re still a long way from being perfect but wins on the board and moving out of last position are positives this side can work on.
The full match replay will be available at the conclusion of the game.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
