A tender is now open to design a brand new Gillen Oval multi-sport precinct that aims to deliver top-notch sporting and recreation facilities for Central Australia.

The government plan to deliver the Gillen Oval Multi-sport precinct enters its next stage in the hopes of supporting local footy, soccer and touch footy clubs.

The development located next to Centralian Middle School will feature multipurpose training fields, new change rooms and toilet facilities, a canteen, shaded spectator areas, increased carparking, and improved landscaping.

People, Sport and Culture minister Jinson Charls said the precinct reflects the government focus on creating healthy, active communities and would help encourage young people to embrace the sport.

“Sport brings people together, and the Gillen Oval Multi-Sport Precinct will give local clubs and schools a place to train, compete and connect,” Mr Charls said.

“We are proud to invest in infrastructure that supports youth development, grows participation, and builds stronger communities in Alice Springs.”

The precinct will offer flexible and accessible facilities that bring together clubs and age groups, promote coaching and volunteering and enhance liveability for the region.

Lands, Planning and Environment minister Joshua Burgoyne welcomed the progress on the project and its role in delivering meaningful outcomes for local families.

“This precinct is about delivering real results for our community, keeping kids engaged, giving clubs the space they need, and restoring Alice Springs’ vibrant lifestyle,” said Mr Burgoyne.

“We promised to back our sporting community, and this project shows we are delivering on that promise.”

Construction of the precinct will commence following the completion of the detailed design phase, with works expected to take 12 months.

Work is also under way to upgrade Jim McConville Oval with the installation of four new light towers allowing year round use of the oval.

The final design review is expected this month and installation by the end of 2025.
