Neptune Security guard hospitalised after stepping on ‘homemade’ spike at Lee Point

A large number of homemade metal spikes scattered on the Lee Point development site have left a security guard in hospital.

Protesters, police and security clash at Lee Point development site as land clearing begins

A security guard at Lee Point has landed in hospital after stepping on one of many ‘homemade’ metal spikes found scattered through the controversial development site.

The NT News understands a Neptune security guard was pierced through the foot by the barb last week, with one source claiming the spikes had been thrown by protesters attempting to disrupt bulldozers clearing bushland.

A star picket was also found buried on site with its sharpened tip exposed – a technique that can be used to pierce tyres.

Friends of Lee Point, one of the groups protesting the Defence Housing Australia development, said their approach was nonviolent and peaceful.

“I haven’t heard anything about any spikes – that’s news to me,” spokesman Ian Redmond said.

“I’ve heard of some people being hurt on the barbed wire, myself included.

“We don’t condone anyone throwing spikes, this is a nonviolent protest, we don’t want to hurt anybody, that’s not what we’re about.”

Mr Redmond said Friends of Lee Point – which he emphasised was one of many groups in the Save Lee Point campaign – wanted a moratorium on land clearing until an independent area plan was undertaken.

“The government’s not really listening to the community … we’d just like an area plan for the whole area, like every other development.”

NT Police said they found a large number of the spikes on site, but had not received any formal complaints of injuries, nor made any arrests in relation to the incident.

“Northern Territory Police located a large number of sharp objects on private property within Lee Point area on Wednesday night. The objects were subsequently destroyed,” a spokesman said.

Chief Minister Eva Lawler said she had been alerted to the incident by NT WorkSafe.

“No worker should be harmed or put in danger for simply doing their job – and this includes the workers at the Lee Point development,” Ms Lawler said.

“We have been informed by NT WorkSafe that homemade spikes have been scattered through the development site at Lee Point Road.

“We respect the right for people to peacefully protest but there is no place for actions that put Territory workers in harm’s way.”

Neptune Security declined to comment.
