A woman who was fatally stabbed in Darwin fled her alleged attacker into a nearby hotel for help where she stumbled across Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney and her staff, who then desperately tried to save her.

Ms Burney, who had been in the Northern Territory for two days visiting local communities, released a statement confirming she comforted the dying woman’s family, while her office staff joined hotel staff assisting the victim before paramedics arrived on Friday evening.

“Last night in Darwin, a woman tragically died after allegedly being stabbed outside a hotel where I was staying,” Ms Burney said.

“The woman came into the hotel to seek help.

“Together with staff from the hotel members of my staff provided assistance to the woman, and I comforted members of her family.”

Northern Territory Police said shortly before 6pm on Friday emergency services were called to an alleged stabbing incident near the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on the Esplanade in Darwin.

Police said the woman entered the hotel seeking help, she was taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital but died a short time later.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the woman’s family and her loved ones,” Ms Burney said.

“I want to thank the hotel staff, the Northern Territory Police and the paramedics who attended.”

Ms Burney said as the matter was being investigated by the Northern Territory Police it would be “inappropriate for me to provide any further comment at this time”.

A man was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.

In a separate incident on the same night, NT Police said a 22-year-old woman allegedly stabbed two people at the Casuarina Shopping Centre in Darwin.

A 41-year-old man was treated by paramedics at the scene for leg injuries and a 29-year-old woman was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries to her back.

The 22-year-old woman remains in custody.

The two alleged stabbing incidents come less than a month after mass anti-crime protests in Darwin sparked by the death of 20-year-old man Declan Laverty, who was fatally stabbed at a Darwin bottle shop.

Following his death, thousands of people attended a rally in Darwin calling for urgent action by the Northern Territory government.

In response the government legislated bail law changes aimed at stopping violent knife crime.

Under the reforms people charged with serious offences involving certain weapons will be subject to a presumption against bail.
