Three hooded home invaders armed with an axe, a shovel and a metal pole have smashed their way into a Katherine home, terrorising a couple inside.
NT police said about 3:30am Thursday, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report that three unknown males had broken into a residence on Ronan Court wearing face coverings.
It is alleged the group gained entry to the residence by throwing a brick through the rear sliding door.
Police allege they were armed with an axe, a shovel and a metal pole.
They said one of the offenders allegedly used an axe to smash his way through a bedroom door. The terrified female victim inside the room screamed and her husband awoke.
Police said the husband confronted the offenders, who began swinging their weapons toward him.
Police said the homeowner was able to deflect their advances with a pole.
Police allege at this time, one of the males entered the bedroom and stole several personal items.
A short time later, the group fled the scene, and the male and female victims secured themselves within their residence.
Police attended and a crime scene was established.
Police said both the occupants were not injured.
At the time of writing, the alleged offenders remain outstanding. Katherine Criminal Investigation Branch and Strikeforce Cerberus are investigating the matter.
Constable Matthew Ragless described the actions of the offenders as “despicable”.
“The incident was traumatising to the occupants of the residence,” he said.
