Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers have played a key role in the apprehension of an illegal vessel spotted heavily camouflaged in a Top End waterway.
The rangers, in collaboration with the NT Police, responded on Saturday evening to a report of an illegal vessel that had entered and concealed itself within the Anindilyakwa Indigenous Protected Area.
Eight alleged illegal fishers were apprehended by NT Police with the assistance of the Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers.
Upon inspection of the vessel a significant cargo of allegedly illegally harvested trepang (sea cucumber) was found.
The rangers said this type of alleged activity is uncommon in the waters surrounding Groote Eylandt, which lie south of the more frequently targeted northern fishing grounds.
The co-ordinated efforts of traditional owners, NT Police, and the Rangers ensured the operation was conducted safely, efficiently, and without incident.
