More than 12,000 aspiring fishos have registered to try their luck at reeling in the big prize ahead of Friday’s official Season 7 opening of the Million Dollar Fish.

MORE than 12,000 fishos have registered to try their luck at reeling in the big prize ahead of Friday’s official Season 7 opening of the Million Dollar Fish competition.

The number of registrations is a 20 per cent increase on the number of people who had registered for Season 6 at the same time last year.

For Season 7, 100 barramundi worth $10,000 each have been released across all five fishing regions in the Top End, including the Tiwi Islands, Darwin, Katherine, Kakadu and Arnhem Land.

All the Million Dollar Fish from previous seasons remain active, meaning there are eight chances to make yourself a millionaire.

Major Events Minister Natasha Fyles said Season 7 presented the perfect opportunity for fishos to achieve a Territory first and catch the big-money fish.

“Lucky Season 7 of Million Dollar Fish is the perfect opportunity for fishers to achieve a Territory first and catch the elusive $1m prize,” Ms Fyles said.

“MDF pumps significant cash into our communities with independent research showing Season 6 generated an economic benefit of $41.3m.

“There’s never been a better time to book a fishing charter for the chance to bag a million dollars.”

There is plenty of evidence that tagged fish from previous seasons are still swimming around, with several caught out of season, the most recent being a Season 6 fish caught at Manton Dam last Sunday.
