UPDATE: Remaining Covid-19 restrictions in the Northern Territory will be lifted at 1pm today, Chief Minister Michael Gunner has announced.
The change means masks will no longer be required in Darwin and Alice Springs.
Gyms, markets and yoga studios can re-open, and dancing will also be is allowed in all indoor and outdoor venues.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said at a press conference this morning that “99.9 per cent” of Territorians had done all the right things.
“This is all down to you,” he said.
“You matched that when you had to, you kept your distance, you checked in.”
“This goes to show our lockdown has worked, we have the virus tracked, but also shows Covid is still very real, (and) multiple testing is necessary to ensure we keep the community safe.”
He praised Territorians who had already been vaccinated, calling them “bloody legends”.
EARLIER: CHIEF Minister Michael Gunner is expected to update the press at 9.30am on the status of the Territory’s Covid-19 restrictions.
Ministers have all week been hinting that restrictions would ease.
The government has however come under fire for not providing more certainty to businesses, and making announcements via social media.
Hospitality NT chief executive Alex Bruce has called for the government to announce their intention days ahead, rather than just hours.
