Townsville's new mayor Nick Dametto has celebrated his first week in office by dancing the macarena at nightclubs and joining DJs on stage.

Freshly minted Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto has enjoyed a raucous evening of celebration after his first week in the job.

The popular former Katters Australian Party deputy leader and Hinchinbrook MP rang in the festivities in the city’s nightclub strip on Saturday – just a day after nabbing three advisers during a Townsville City Council special meeting to vote on the matter.

Spotted at 237 engaging happily with his constituents – and dancing the macarena – Townsville’s latest leader was given a shout out on social media by DJ and radio personality Dannii ‘DJ Delicious’ McMurrich for “being such a ripper sport” and joining her on the music stage and the mic.

“It was a lovely night,” Mr Dametto said when contacted by the Townsville Bulletin.
“Catching up with some of our younger constituents, ratepayers of Townsville, I got a chance to go to a number of Christmas parties on Saturday night and spend some time on Flinders Street.

“Dannii didn’t let me anywhere near the wheels of steel, the DJ mixing gear was definitely in her hands, but it was a good chance to get on the microphone and wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and the response from the crowd was quite electric.”

Mr Dametto said he considered it important to make sure he was meeting people where they were in his new role.

“I think it’s important for a mayor to be everywhere from the nursing homes to the school facilities right through to mixing in with the young people of our city; Townsville’s been crying out for a mayor for all of Townsville.”

The Mayor added that he thought the night-life of Townsville was an important part of aking the city a destination.

“I want to make sure we’re getting night-life right and I’ll continue to engage with visitors to the drink safe precinct as well as our venue operators and managers to best understand how Townsville City Council can support our night-life.”

Mr Dametto, who kicked off his plans to revitalise Townsville and restore trust in the public service with a “back to basics blitz” last week, was then seen on Sunday at several public events; assisting the Townsville Barramundi Restocking Group with a release of around 9000 fingerlings in the Ross River Dam and making an appearance at the Carols by Candlelight event at the Riverway precinct.
