VICTORIANS who dare step foot in the NT when border measures ease on July 17 will be thrown into a mandatory quarantine at their own expense, with the Chief Minister confirming the Territory will stay shut to the coronavirus-ravaged state.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner on Wednesday morning confirmed NT authorities had made the decision to keep harsh border measures in place for Victorians indefinitely.
From July 17, only people who come from or who have been in coronavirus hotspots will be forced into 14 days of quarantine if they travel into the NT.
The entirety of Victoria is now considered a hotspot by the NT.
At the moment all arrivals into the NT must self-quarantine for 14 days regardless of where they are from.
It comes after multiple Indigenous organisations, including Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance NT called on the NT Government to keep the border shut to Victoria after July 17 due to the vulnerability of the Territory community to the virus.
More than 5.2 million Victorians in the Greater Melbourne area have been forced back into harsh lockdown conditions for at least six weeks after Premier Daniel Andrews announced the return of stage 3 quarantine measures.
Victoria recorded 191 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday — including 154 from unknown sources — and a further 134 cases today.
