Glass Animals have topped triple j’s Hottest 100 - as they were expected to - with Heat Waves. Released last July, the song has belatedly become a mainstream hit and bulleted to No. 11 on the ARIA chart today. The UK band scored three songs in the Hottest 100 and released a video where they re-imagined Heat Waves as a sea shanty last week. Fremantle band Spacey Jane had an incredible year, placing four songs, including Booster Seat at No.2.
Flume, who featured earlier with a cheesy remix of Eiffel 65’s Blue, redeemed himself with his collaboration with US musician Toro y Moi The Difference at No.3. This is the sixth time Flume has scored a Hottest 100 Top 10 spot.
Hilltop Hoods scored the 21st Hottest 100 placing of their career, they are now just one song behind record holders Powderfinger.
And in a sea of guitar bands and dad rock, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion came in hot with their W.A.P.

EVERYONE RIGHT TO GO?
Daniel Andrews has declared the Hottest 100 no longer hot! Andrews’ novelty hit Get On the Beer, where his voice was sampled by Queensland dance duo Mashd N Kutcher, has landed at No. 12 on the Hottest 100.
The last time a politician got close to the Hottest 100 was when another novelty artist, Pauline Pantsdown, imitated Pauline Hanson back in 1997 and 1998.
Andrews introduced the song saying he was happy to join other “Hottest 100 novelty artists like Dennis Leary, Adam Sandler and Pauline Pantsdown. I think we can all agree their contributions have stood the test of time.”
But the Victorian Premier put his tongue in his cheek when he declared the countdown had lost its heat.
“What’s clear is now a politician has made the Hottest 100, this is probably going to be the last Hottest 100, it’s no longer hot. I’m sorry to all the Gen X’rs out there who have to bid farewell to their most important annual cultural tradition. I can now officially declare that is time to get on the beers.”

LIME CORDIALE HAT TRICK
Lots of repeat action here. The late Mac Miller’s posthumous album scores back to back entries, while we’d been waiting for Sydney duo Lime Cordiale to come through and they left their rush to the pointy end with three in the 20s. They had four entries last year, can they equal that this year? Keep an eye out for WA band Spacey Jane too, their song Booster Seat is a No. 1 contender. Good showing for pop songs by first-timers Sycco and Eves Karydas too. And Stace Cadet and KLP’s banger Energy cruelly just misses the Top 20.
29. Sycco – Dribble
28. Spacey Jane – Straightfaced
27. Skegss – Under the Thunder
26. Lime Cordiale – No Time To Make Plans
25. Lime Cordiale – Reality Check Please

20. Lime Cordiale – Addicted to the Sunshine
JUICE WRLD DOMINATING FROM AFTER WRLD
Late rapper Juice Wrld now has four tracks in this Hottest 100, which may be hard to beat at this late stage. Melbourne’s The Avalanches are still polling in the Hottest 100 after 20 years in the game – they made No. 6 with Frontier Psychiatrist in 2000, then No. 8 with Since I Left You the next year and Frankie Sinatra made No. 28 in 2016. Running Red Lights is from their third album, We Will Always Love You, but Warm Tunas predicated that would reach as high as No. 13. Hmm. Amy Shark’s Everybody Rise also wasn’t quite as high as some expected but still good job. Expect more songs from Tame Impala (potentially two more), Halsey and we haven’t seen any Lime Cordiale at all yet …

38. Bring Me the Horizon – Parasite Eve

32. Criminals – DMA’s
31. Reasons – San Cisco
30. Birdz ft. Fred Leone – Bagi-La-M Bargan
CONTROVERSIAL MUSOS LOB IN HOTTEST 100
OK we’re officially half way through. And controversial Byron Bay musician Ziggy Alberts has polled high with Together.
In July Alberts posted on Instagram against Victorian lockdowns, clumsily comparing them to Nazi Germany (which he back-pedalled from) and said mandating face masks “stripped Australians of their basic rights in what is supposed to be a free society” and said “There is [sic] so many more ways to protect a minority of immune compromised citizen [sic] without mandating face masks or lockdowns.”
If cancel culture actually exists, how in the hell is Ziggy Alberts in the top 50 of the #Hottest100??
— Sam Bradbrook (@Sambradbrook) January 23, 2021
Artists including Gordi (who is also a doctor), Nina Las Vegas and Alex Lahey called out Alberts on Instagram, as well as triple j host Bridget Hustwaite. This is Albert’s fourth Hottest 100 placing since 2018. Also surrounded by controversy is Melbourne band The Smith Street Band, whose singer Wil Wagner was accused of “harassment and emotional abuse” by Georgia McDonald of Camp Cope in 2019. At the time Wagner admitted to saying “incredible hurtful things”, but said they had been “selectively shown out of context”. Meanwhile rapper Juice Wrld, who died in December 2019, continues to score posthumous Hottest 100 hits.
49. Juice Wrld – Wishing Well
48. Headie One ft. Stormzy, AJ Tracey – Ain’t It Different

41. The Smith Street Band – I Still Dream About You
40. Juice Wrld ft. Marshmello – Come and Go
MORE TO COME FOR TONES AND I?
Well triple j listeners love a novelty track – and Flume’s remix of Eiffel 65’s Blue has outpolled some amazing tracks to lob at No. 54. Does this bode well for Mashd N Kutcher’s Dan Andrews sampling novelty dance hit Get on the Beers landing in the pointy end? Tones And I’s Dance Monkey only reached No. 4 last year and while she released a whole bunch of singles last year, will Fly Away be her only Hottest 100 appearance at No. 58? The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights was actually released in time to be eligible for last year’s Hottest 100, where it scraped in at a shameful No. 71, In Your Eyes at least redeems things a little this year. And UK band Glass Animals, whose song Heat Waves is a favourite for No. 1 this year, had more than one song connecting with listeners this year.
59. Joji – Gimme Love
58. Tones And I – Fly Away
57. Beddy Rays – Sober Coaster
56. San Cisco – On the Line
55. Alex the Astronaut – I Think You’re Great

51. Glass Animals – Your Love (Deja Vu)
50. Peking Duk and the Wombats – Nothing to Love About Love
THE KID LAROI’S HOTTEST 100 DEBUT
We’re getting deeper into the Hottest 100. Unearthed star Hope D made everyone happy at No. 69 with Second – prediction site Warm Tunas had her ranking at No. 34, so was a little out of whack. Lie to Me is only Vera Blue’s fifth appearance in a Hottest 100 – her highest peak being No. 15 in 2017 with Mended. Amy Shark is back, C’Mon is her sixth Hottest 100 placing – she didn’t have anything out last year but should feature later with Everybody Rise. Brisbane’s Ball Park Music’s Day and Age is now their 10th Hottest 100 placing – currently 2017’s Exactly How You Are is their highest peak at No. 18, but will they top that this year with Cherub, which will be coming up later. And Australian teen The Kid Laroi has made his Hottest 100 debut, with the late rapper Juice WRLD, who reached No. 42 last year with his track Robbery.

Melbourne’s G-Flip has already appeared with Illy, now she’s back with her Labelle/Moulin Rouge cover from Like a Version – you’ll no doubt hear her HyperFine later too. Sofi Tukker, who made No. 14 last year with Purple Hat, is back with her dance collaboration with Gorgon City. Remi Wolf is one of the 26 newbies this year with the Prince-like Photo ID. Sydney band Ocean Alley clocked their eighth Hottest 100 appearance with Way Down – the band reached No. 1 in 2018 with Confidence. JUNGLE GIANTS SWING IN
Queensland band Jungle Giants just made the voting cut off with In Her Eyes, now their seventh Hottest 100 placing – their Sending Me UR Loving should feature higher later. Three Leaf Clover by Teenage Joans was tipped to be Top 40 by Warm Tunas – oops. Canadian rapper Drake lobbed his lucky seventh Hottest 100 song with Laugh Now Cry Later.
Brisbane band Dune Rats displayed why the Hottest 100 has language warnings with Too Tough Terry and only Sunshine Coast punks The Chats could open a song called The Clap with the lyric “last week pulled a root in the back of me ute”. The Chats reached No. 21 last year with Pub Feed. Perth band Spacey Jane also debuted in the Hottest 100 last year (reaching No. 80 with Good For You) and almost match that with Weightless. However their track Booster Seat is one of the contenders to reach No. 1

NSW surf rockers Hockey Dad notched up their sixth and seventh Hottest 100 placing with Itch and Germpahobe and NYC dance act Joji lobbed at No. 98 with Your Man – a Hottest 100 newbie.
UK rapper Stormzy’s Audacity is now his third Hottest 100 placing – he made No. 27 last year with Vossi Bop. Illy’s Loose Ends (with G-Flip) is now his tenth Hottest 100 appearance. Thelma Plum’s Powderfinger cover is now her sixth placing since 2014.

GLASS ANIMALS TOP FAVOURITES AS DAN ANDREWS TIPPED FOR MENTION
British band Glass Animals remain the favourite to top today’s triple j Hottest 100.
Their song Heat Waves has been singled out by Nicholas Whyte, who runs the 100 Warm Tunas prediction page by collating votes posted on social media.
Heat Waves was released in June last year, but the buzz around the song’s Hottest 100 popularity has seen it crack the ARIA Top 50 six weeks ago – it currently sits at No. 17.
Other songs expected to poll in the Top 5 include Brisbane band Ball Park Music with Cherub, Perth band Spacey Jane’s Booster Seat, Flume’s collaboration with US artist Toro y Moi The Difference and Melbourne’s G Flip with Hyperfine.
Victorian premier Daniel Andrews could make his Hottest 100 debut this year – Brisbane dance duo Mashd N Kutcher sampled quotes from his pandemic press conferences for the viral hit Get on The Beers. 100 Warm Tunas currently has it scoring a Top 15 placing.
The Hottest 100 starts at midday on triple j and will end around 8pm.
