A desperate search is under way off Port Macquarie after two European backpackers went missing while swimming at a beach.
The alarm was first raised when a group of walkers found clothing belonging to Hugo Palmer and Erwan Ferrieux, both 20, near the waterline on Shelley Beach early yesterday morning.
Authorities were called and found their Holden station wagon nearby in a car park before launching a massive search involving water police and the SES.
The pair’s wallets and passports were reportedly left behind in the car, leading police to fear the worst.
There has been no sign of the two as of Tuesday morning, officers said.
