The Masked Singer Australia 2022: Lisa Curry unveiled as Caterpillar

A much-loved sporting legend has been unveiled on The Masked Singer Australia after an emotional performance. Warning: spoilers.

First look at The Masked Singer Australia 2022

Australian swimming legend Lisa Curry has been unveiled as the second superstar performer on The Masked Singer Australia.

Hidden beneath a magnificent caterpillar costume, the Commonwealth Games powerhouse and best-selling author shocked judges when her identity was revealed.

She had wowed viewers with her heartfelt rendition of Tones and I’s Cloudy Day, but was no match for Rooster’s cocky take on 24K Magic by Bruno Mars.

Guided by the clues, judge Mel B thought Caterpillar was the infamous Schapelle Corby, Abbie Chatfield was set on The Project panellist Carrie Bickmore and Dave Hughes and Chrissie Swan were convinced it was Australian athletes Sally Pearson or Emily Seebohm.

After her unmasking, Curry said: “Caterpillars can’t sing, but we do turn into beautiful butterflies. And that I can do. Well at my age, I’ll probably turn into a moth!”

It comes after Neighbours star Ryan Moloney — fresh from his Ramsay Street farewell — was unmasked as the first celebrity performer as the Masked Singer returned to Australia for a fourth season.

Disguised in knight armour, Moloney’s rendition on Sunday of Ed Sheeran’s Bad Habits wasn’t enough to keep him on the show.

The judges were unable to detect Ryan as the Knight, and instead nominated Nick Cummins, Shannon Noll, Brendan Fevola and David Hasselhoff as its possible identity.

After his unmasking, Moloney Ryan said: “28 years on Neighbours, I tell you this is the shortest job I have ever had!”

Social media has been buzzing with rumours that Mel B – who’s new on the panel with Chrissie Swan, Abbie Chatfield joining original judge Dave Hughes – won’t be the only Spice Girl on the bonkers reality show.

Eagle eyes spotted Emma Bunton, aka Baby Spice, dining with Mel in Sydney while the show was filming last month.

All we know for sure is that a former Neighbours star, a Grammy Award recipient, a multiple Logie winner and a gold medal-winning legend of Australian sport will be among the costumed singers.

While there’s traditionally been 12 contestants, only 10 costumes have been announced. An industry insider hinted viewers can expect some “intruders” to drop in as the season unfolds. Speculation is that these might be international superstars who can’t commit to the entire series.

MASKED SINGER AUSTRALIA CLASS OF 2022

Mirrorball

The overwhelming social media consensus is that this is our very own pop princess Kylie Minogue.

In one of the trailers, Mel B reveals the performer behind the glittery mask is “tiny” and she is “the queen of dance floors across the world”.

So perhaps Minogue was just resting her vocal cords in her virtually no-speak cameo in the Neighbour’s finale.

Or is it former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton?

A promo teases there is a contestant who has ‘sold more than 50 million records worldwide’. Others have suggested Taylor Swift (calm down Twitter), Delta Goodrem and Samantha Jade.

Thong
There’s always a few less pretty costumes among Chappel’s designs and this year it’s the quintessentially Aussie footwear.

There’s been plenty of jokes online that perhaps it’s US singer Sisqo who’s known for The Thong Song – which is about a completely different Thong (the one you don’t wear on your feet!).

Others have suggested The Project’s Waleed Aly. He is the lead guitarist for his band Robot Child, so it’s not completely left-of-field.

Popcorn

Popcorn and movies go hand-in-hand, so could we expect one of our leading Hollywood men to be under the fun costume – think triple-threat Hugh Jackman or one of the Hemsworths even?

Social media has other theories. “I have a good guess who this could be. They have a song called Hot Poppin Popcorn so I think it’s the former Yellow Wiggle Sam Moran”.

Look, he was in a Wiggle movie or two, so it doesn’t completely discount our theory.

Blowfly

Only an Oscar-winning costume designer could make a blowfly look this appealing. Clever clogs out there have posted “could it possibly be pretty fly for a white guy?, referencing US punk-rock band Offspring’s no. 1 hit.

It’s possible the ‘90s iconic group’s lead singer Dexter Holland would say yes.

We haven’t actually heard the voice so the theory that’s been widely touted that Dannii Minogue, stepping away from the show as a panellist, could instead show up as a singer isn’t quite out of the question.

Although we’d hope for a much more glam get-up for her.

Tiger

Jason Donovan is a hot tip to be behind the big cat costume.

While it’s not quite Sealed With A Kiss, he certainly could have tied it in with his Neighbours’ farewell appearance. Other names being bandied about on social media include I’m a Celebrity host Chris Brown who has formed a parody duo – Tone Deaf Leopard – with good mate Sam Mac. Plus Aussie actors Tim Campbell and Hugh Sheridan or even original Hi-5 member Nathan Foley.

Rooster

There’s been no clues released at all about this clucking costume. But that hasn’t stopped speculation. One time King of the Jungle Brendan Fevola has been mentioned and he loves to strut his stuff in reality shows. Comedian Nazeen Hussein and even Hollywood actor and Tenacious D singer Jack Black have also been suggested.

Zombie

Instagram and Twitter have gone off for this costume. “Focus on the gloves, and hands give me freaky Wentworth vibes. Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson! Pamela Rabe! Not sure she’d do this show, but would be amazing.”

Or even Margot Robbie – another Neighbour’s alumni – with keen fans saying “ that is her outfit from Pan Am the TV show”.

Others threw their support behind Sweet About Me singer Gabriella Cilmi.

Knight

Multiple Logie-winning TV presenter Grant Denyer has been tipped for a few years-in-a-row to showcase his vocal stylings on the reality singing competition. Denyer, who has won multiple Logie awards throughout his career including the 2018 Gold, came second to Chatfield on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!

Grant Denyer is no Cody Simpson.

He’s got all the moves as evidenced by winning Dancing with the Stars twice. This headless knight in shining armour could certainly accommodate – and hide – his 1.64m frame.

Caterpillar

Whispers around the traps of those tipped to be in this year’s cast includes another former Hi-5 performer Charli Robinson. And this cutesy, child’s toylike costume would suit her vibe. Online speculation has suggested “Maybe someone from Playschool for story time – A Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Could it be long-time host, actor and singer Justine Clarke? Another dedicated fan mused whether the large costume could house two contestants. “Could be the Duo mask I was waiting for?”

Snapdragon

And last, but certainly not least, possibly the most stunning costume revealed so far.

This sensational voice has given the superstar guessing panel all the goosebumps – or gooseys as Chatfield seems to be saying on repeat – and even reduces Chrissie Swan to tears. Look, that voice sounds like Eurovision singer Sheldon Riley.

I’m so confident in this prediction, that it if turns out to be “Not The Same” singer, I’ll eat my hat.
