The Castle cast reflect on geat Australian dream as they reunite for Uber Green campaign

The stars of The Castle reflect on how life has changed 28 years since they made the iconic film, and how one unusual act brought two of them closer. SEE THE VIDEO

It was the hit Australian film of its day — launched in 1997, when rates dropped to five per cent, the median house price was just below $200,000 and a Holden Commodore set you back $30,000.

And 28 years on, many similarities can be taken from the iconic movieThe Castle, as we struggle to make the great Aussie dream a reality.

“We’ve also seen the advent of smashed avocado on toast. So between that, the ease of travel and the cozzi (cost of) livs (living) crisis, the idea of home ownership has become such an unattainable goal in that amount of time too, which is a really sad thing,” Stephen Curry, who played Dale Kerrigan in the film, said.

In a surprise reunion, Curry, Michael Caton and Anthony Simcoe, reflected on the era they shot the flick, with an unusual reveal: that despite his homegrown fame, Simcoe was too broke to buy a car.

“My first car was given to me by Michael,” the 56-year-old divulged.

“After The Castle — Michael and I are friends and I’m really good friends with Michael’s son Sep — and he knew I was struggling and I’d never owned a car.

“Michael was upgrading his car, and [in] just one of the most generous, beautiful things that has ever been done for me, Michael went, ‘Well, I’m buying a new car, you can have my old car’.”

The beloved trio have teamed up for the ‘Uber Green? That’s True Blue!’ campaign, as the rideshare company expands its zero-emissions portfolio and Uber Green becomes a fully electric option.

New research shows cost and convenience are the biggest barriers for Aussies going green, something the actors are familiar with in their own lives. Caton and his wife still can’t settle on which EV to drive.

“We have to set the example for the rest of the world,” the 81-year-old said.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to leave the country with more than a worked-out quarry.”

Curry, 49, said it is important to reduce our carbon footprint “because while we’re not going to be here forever, we’re trying to leave a good legacy for our kids”.

The Castle has also become a historic legacy in its own right, after it became a text students read in Year 12 for final exams.

Caton said one of the lasting messages of the popular film is about how Australia is a “great immigrant country”.

Curry believes one of the themes of the movie was about being appreciative for what you had.

“Loving what you have and nurturing and protecting what you have above all else,” he said.

“I think it’s such an inspiring film in that regard.

“People might look at the Kerrigan house and think that it’s not much, and you would take the extra $25,000, and ‘what are you doing?’

“But as Darryl Kerrigan told us, it’s not a house, it’s a home. It’s about the memories that you make in that home, and it’s about the love that grows in that home.”
