Police on the hunt for the driver of a white ute

Police have identified the 20-year-old victim of an overnight hit-and-run incident in Cairns as they reveal he was struck by two separate vehicles.

IT HAS been revealed the man killed in a hit and run incident was struck by two separate vehicles late Thursday night.

First responders to the incident tried desperately to save the life of a 20-year-old Terrance Jacko however he died at the scene.

Mr Jacko was walking down James St toward Sheridan St when he was struck by a white utility before being hit a second time by another car just after midnight.

Sergeant Cary Coolican of the Cairns Police said the driver of the second vehicle had come forward to assist police with their inquiries.

“We have spoken to one female driver who has collided into the male person while he was on the ground,” she said.

“She has provided plenty of information and other witnesses have come forward to give information to support her claims.”

Sgt Coolican said a man living in a nearby house heard the impact and rushed to lend assistance.

“Other motorists and pedestrians have actually come to the aid of the man and police were actually flagged down,” she said.

Sgt Coolican said forensic teams had gathered evidence at the scene and conducted door knocks of the area.

“They can piece together pieces of debris left at the scene to identify vehicles and match them to a vehicle later on,” she said.

James St resident Bob Patterson said he was watching the cricket late Thursday night when he saw flashing lights in the street.

“I got up just out of curiosity … then the police constable came and asked me if I saw anything,” he said.

“I heard nothing, not a screech of brakes or anything.”

Sgt Coolican urged the driver of the white utility seen in the vicinity of James St to come forward.

“Anyone that is involved in a serious crash like this, there responsibility is to stop and render assistance,” she said.

“That has not been the case. It maybe that the driver has panicked or not aware that they have struck a person.”

Anyone with information or CCTV footage relating to the accident is asked to contact police.
