A STARRING role in the upcoming Pirates Of The Caribbean film changed Brenton Thwaites’ life in more ways than one. Not only is it set to catapult the Home and Away alumni to mega-stardom, it also had a flow-on effect in his personal life.
“This movie, in part, led to the creation of my daughter (Birdie),” Thwaites told Confidential. “We had a huge break in between shooting. That’s when I moved out of my house, into a rental house, which is where I met my girlfriend (Chloe Pacey).
“We haven’t stopped living together since and a year later we had our daughter.”
The 27-year-old Cairns-born actor is now based in Los Angeles and loving life with his young family. “Being a dad is fantastic,” he said.
The fifth instalment of the Hollywood film franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, was shot on the Gold Coast in 2015 and 2016. “I lived the Gold Coast surfing life for six to seven months. It was horrible,” Thwaites joked.
At the time, his co-star and older doppelganger Johnny Depp was infamously charged, along with his now ex-wife Amber Heard, for illegally bringing their two pet dogs Pistol and Boo into the country.
Thwaites though, describing himself as a Depp “mega fan”, has only good things to say about the man who plays antihero pirate Jack Sparrow.
“He’s a really cool, sweet guy,” he said. “I never really saw him out of costume.”
Pirates is Thwaites’ latest big film role following his appearances in Hollywood films Maleficent and Gods Of Egypt.
He’s hoping the juggernaut franchise, which hits cinemas on May 25, will open even more doors for him internationally. Ultimately, he’d like to emulate the success of fellow former Home and Awayer Chris Hemsworth.
“The movies I’ve been in before, I’ve been proud of, but for better of worse they’ve hit or missed … this one feels like a re-entrance into Hollywood, which is exciting.”
When he has time, Thwaites still manages to catch a few episodes of the Aussie show that started it all. “Of course I still watch Home and Away.”
The down-to-earth surfer will walk the red carpet alongside Depp and other co-stars for the film’s world premiere in Shanghai later this month.
The latest Pirates film also stars Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and fellow Aussie Geoffrey Rush.
