Ex-Labor MP Milton Orkopoulos charged over alleged historical child sex offences

Disgraced former Labor MP and convicted paedophile Milton Orkopoulos has been arrested at Silverwater jail and charged with further child sex offences dating back to the 1990s.

Disgraced former Labor MP and convicted paedophile Milton Orkopoulos has been charged with further child sex offences.

Orkopoulos was arrested at 11am this morning at Silverwater jail by Lake Macquarie detectives, after an extensive investigation under Strike Force Glenwarrie, which was set up in January to investigate allegations of historic sexual and indecent assault offences against two juvenile boys in the 1990s.

Police will allege Orkopoulos sexually assaulted two young boys who were known to him on separate occasions in the 1990s, in Lake Macquarie and the Mid North Coast.

Just after midday Orkopoulos was charged with 15 fresh offences, including five counts of aggravated sexual assault of a victim under 16 years and five counts of aggravated indecent assault of victims under 16 years.

He is also being charged with three counts of forcing a child under 14 to participate in prostitution, commit act of indecency and aggravated indecency.

The former Swansea MP spent 11 years in jail after being convicted on a slew of charges in 2008, including having sex with a male between 10-18, possessing child pornography and indecent assault.

Orkopoulos was arrested at 11am at Silverwater jail by Lake Macquarie detectives.

Orkopoulos was released on parole in 2019, but was returned to jail after breaking his parole conditions on two occasions.

He served in parliament from 1999 to 2006, and was a Lake Macquarie councillor for four years.

Lake Macquarie Police Superintendent Danny Sullivan said Strike Force Glenwarrie was formed after two people came forward in January.

“We’re working very closely with them and one of the things that happens when you come forward is not only do we investigate the criminal aspect, but we work with those victims around many services including counselling and support,” he said.

“As you would expect, coming forward in relation to a sexual offence is something that is extremely traumatic and distressing in and of itself.

“We’re very thankful for the courage that has been shown by the people in relation to this.”

Superintendent Sullivan said investigations are ongoing.

“I’d encourage any persons whether they’d be an alleged victim or a witness to come forward and contact Lake Macquarie detectives,” he said.

“You can also do that anonymously on Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. We don’t have to know who you are, we just want to know what you know.”

Orkopoulos will face court in Newcastle tomorrow.
