Cairns woman suffers critical injuries in Mulgrave River Bridge crash

A Cairns woman has critical injuries and police are requesting public assistance after a serious crash on the Bruce Highway near Gordonvale.

UPDATE 6.15AM: Police are asking for dashcam footage of serious traffic crash at Gordonvale yesterday.

Around 4.30pm, an SUV was travelling northbound on the Bruce Highway at the Mulgrave River Bridge when it collided with a medium rigid truck travelling southbound.

The driver of the SUV, a 48-year-old woman from Brinsmead, was flown to Townsville with critical injuries. The two passengers, boys aged 11 and 13, were flown to Cairns Hospital.

The truck driver, a 54-year-old man from Flying Fish Point, was transported to Cairns with serious leg and internal injuries.

The boys and the truck driver remain in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Senior Constable Heidi Marek said the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

“Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam footage or anyone who may have witnessed the crash on the Bruce Highway at around 4.30pm yesterday to please come forward,” Cst Marek said.

“We also remind drivers to take care on our roads following a serious traffic at Lockhart River on Saturday afternoon which left the driver, a 14-year-old boy in a critical condition and another five teenage passengers with minor injuries.”

EARLIER 9.10PM: The Bruce Highway has reopened to traffic after a protracted effort to recover and treat four patients injured in a truck v SUV car crash at the Mulgrave River bridge at Gordonvale.

Three patients, two boys age 11 and 13, and a 54-year old man, the truck driver were taken to Cairns Hospital via Rescue510 helicopter.

According to a QAS spokesman, the boys suffered multiple injuries and are in serious condition while the truck driver suffered serious lower leg and hip injuries

The fourth patient, a 48-year-old woman, was trapped for around an hour with multiple critical injuries.

She was transported by rescue helicopter to Cairns Hospital and has since been transferred to Townsville Hospital for more advanced treatment.

Four fire crews were required to free the man and woman entrapped within their vehicles.

The Bruce Highway was reopened at around 8.40pm, over four hours after the crash.

EARLIER: The Bruce Highway remains closed to traffic in the aftermath of a crash, now confirmed to have been between a truck and an SUV at Gordonvale.

Four patients have been confirmed in the incident- two young boys who have been taken to Cairns Hospital via rescue helicopter, the truck driver taken to hospital by road, and the driver of the car who is still to be transported by air.

A QAS spokeswoman said the patient will be taken back to the Rescue hangar to be flown to Townsville Hospital.

EARLIER: THE Bruce Highway is closed in both directions and the rescue chopper has arrived at a multiple vehicle crash that has left a young child trapped and injured.

Emergency services were called to the Mulgrave River bridge at Gordonvale at 4.30pm, which has been shut down in both directions with diversions on the northern side.

The exact cause of the crash and the number of vehicles involved is unknown, though a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed that four patients have been treated at the scene.

Two patients, a primary-school age boy with abdominal injuries and a teenage boy with unknown injuries have been retrieved by Rescue 510, while two patients, a female with head injuries and another patient remain entrapped.
