Four people came close to drowning on Boxing Day — one man at Palm Beach, and a man and two children from Lake Illawarra — as thousands flocked to swimming spots around the state to soak up the Boxing Day sunshine.
The first close call came at around 1.30pm, when Surf Rescue lifeguards pulled a man in his 60s from dangerous surf at Palm Beach.
The man is understood to have been surfing when he felt neck pain and suffered paralysis on his left side.
NSW Ambulance crews stabilised the man on the beach before he was stretchered to a waiting ambulance in a neck brace. His condition was unknown last night.
Later in the afternoon, two young children and a man were saved from the water at Lake Illawarra, south of Sydney.
It is understood that the man, aged around 45, and the two children were pulled to shore by lifeguards around 4.30pm.
A person at the scene reportedly performed CPR before NSW Ambulance teams arrived.
The man could be seen lying on his side in shallow water while concerned beachgoers watched on in shock.
Two people were taken to Wollongong Hospital, where they remained in a stable condition last night.

It is not known how the man and two children came so close to drowning in the lake.
The close calls came on a day of baking heat and rough swells in and around Sydney. Dangerous surf conditions closed Sydney beaches at Tamarama, Maroubra and Bronte through the morning, while the mercury hit 28 degrees in parts of the city.
