A man police say could be involved in the execution of underworld heavyweight Mejid Hamzy has been captured on camera wearing a mask as he drove down a western Sydney street soon after the shooting.
Mejid Hamzy, 44 — the brother of jailed gang leader Bassam Hamzy — was gunned down in the driveway of his home at Condell Park at 7.30am on October 17 by two men.
About 20 minutes later police tracked a black Mercedes being driven by who they believe was one of the men involved in the shooting.
Police say the Mercedes was seen in Simmat Ave where Hamzy died in his doorway after being shot multiple times.
No charges have been laid in relation to Mejid Hamzy’s death.
Detectives are positive the black Mercedes is connected to the shooting.
The car was seen driving down Metcalf, Craig and Selway avenues in nearby Moorebank about 7.50am. In the footage the driver appears to still be masked.
Police say the shooting of Mejid’s Hamzy was the result of a war between the Alameddine and Hamzy families which has been ongoing in Sydney’s south west for years.
“Obviously these are organised criminal syndicates who are targeting each other and they know who they are targeting,” NSW Police assistant commissioner Peter Thurtell said at the time.
Hamzy was killed days after the feud escalated when an Alameddine foot soldier was bashed and a mobile phone stolen.
Since his death there have been a string of tit for tat shootings which have resulted in one killing and one attempted murder linked to the feud.
The near shooting of a nurse by a stray bullet which went into Auburn Hospital in February after a unit connected to the Hamzy clan was shot sparked a massive police response.
Police Commissioner Mick Fuller brought forward plans to elevate Strike Force Raptor to its own squad and give it extra resources.
