Vegemite’s iconic “We’re happy little Vegemites” advertisement has been reworked with a new cast of Aussie kids who beat 10,000 hopefuls for the roles.
The new ad is being released on Thursday and is part of Bega Food’s plans to mark 100 years of the popular spread.
The Happy Little Vegemite jingle is known by generations of Aussies, and Bega Foods is hoping the new version – which blends familiar scenes with colourful new additions featuring the new stars – will prove just as legendary as the original that first aired in the 1950s.
“When Vegemite announced the remake of the Happy Little Vegemites ad, we knew one thing was true – it was a chance for some lucky kids to weave themselves into the Aussie history books … We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate its incredible legacy than by inviting a new generation of Happy Little Vegemite’s to be a part of something incredibly special,” Bega Foods General Manager, Marketing, Matt Gray said.
The Bega team spent weeks looking at the 10,000 audition videos to pick their six new Happy Little Vegemites.
“We were looking for creativity and passion for the Vegemite brand,” Mr Gray said of the eventual winners, Brielle, 6, Cyril, 7, Albie, 7, Amber, 10, Ava, 10, and Xavier, 11.
Ava said the ad took a day to film, and although it was tiring, she’d like to do more.
Their moves didn’t take long to learn.
“We got it sent to us to watch at home,” she said.
Xavier said they had to keep their roles secret from their friends.
“I told one of my friends and he screamed it out so I had to shoosh him,” he said.
The reworked ad includes a cameo from Trish Cavanagh, one of the stars of the original ad.
Ms Cavanagh, now 71, who was just seven years old when she marched on top of the Vegemite jar – a moment she said “changed my life forever”.
“These children today don’t realise what a big event this is for them, and I hope in the years to come they look back with pride. To be in the remake of the original Vegemite ad for
Vegemite’s 100th birthday is something very special. Get ready for the ride kids – I think it
will be a long one,” she said.
