Karl Stefanovic will reportedly soon be stepping away from his breakfast television co-hosting commitments as part of a bold new change in career direction.

The Today host has his sights on a behind-the-scenes role that would allow him more time with his family, and a bigger focus on producing stories for 60 Minutes, according to Now To Love.

An insider told the publication Stefanovic will give up his chair alonside Allison Langdon, in favour of a role that would support “getting people back into regional Australia”.

“After more than two decades at Nine, he remains their number one, and they’re doing everything to keep their star recruit happy for at least another 10 years,” the insider said

“He’s committed to getting people back into regional Australia – last week he was in country Victoria and NSW with the charity Gotcha4Life’s Mateship Miles Roadshow – he’s passionate about this sort of stuff.”

While the 47-year-old’s role on Today is expected to be heavily wound back, he is expected to continue reporting on bigger stories for the program.

He will be travelling more for 60 Minutes stories, the publication reported, particularly now that travel is easier.

The source added the dad-of-four, who was reinstated with Today in 2020 after being axed in 2018, had earned the reputation of Nine’s “secret weapon”.

It’s expected Stefanovic, apparently known as “seal-the-deal Karl”, would also help negotiate the network’s big broadcasting rights like the NRL, the publication reported.

Executives were reportedly impressed with his recent work, including his 60 Minutes interview with Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Stefanovic was axed from Today in 2018 after 15 years with the network.

Fallout from details of an embarrassing phone call – later termed Ubergate – between Stefanovic and his brother Peter were leaked to New Idea, were believed to have contributed.

He was reinstated after one year as his replacements failed to deliver on ratings.

The source said following the scandal, Stefanovic had “reinvented” himself, and was now more content than ever.

“He’s loving life with Jas and their little girl Harper, who is a real character, like her dad,” they told the publication.

His wife Jasmine recently announced she and her business partner Tamie Ingham were closing their luxury footwear line, Mara & Mine.

The decision is consistent with the couple reportedly desperately wanting more time together.

The couple plan to renovate their Sydney home, and will hold onto their $7 million abode in Noosa despite earlier putting it on the market.
