John Ibrahim: How much cash police found at Sydney home

During a police raid on John Ibrahim’s mansion in 2017, a video taken by officers showed they found thousands of dollars in loose notes in his bedroom — but the Kings of the Cross wasn’t too worried about the small notes. Police recorded the raid, which was tendered in multiple court cases. WATCH THE VIDEO

Ibrahim house raids: Keep the shrapnel

When police raided John Ibrahim’s house in 2017, they spent 12 hours turning his Eastern Suburbs mansion upside down looking for incriminating evidence.

The Kings Cross identity wasn’t charged, but police found several surprises in his house, like numerous safes, bags of white powder and that his house was a communal living arrangement.

It was the climax of an 18 month police investigation that led to about 20 arrests and the simultaneous raids of the homes belonging to John’s siblings, Michael, Fadi and Jazz Dior. Police recorded each of the raids, which were tendered in multiple court cases.

The videos shed unprecedented insight on one of Sydney’s most fascinating families.

The searches uncovered a hidden pinhole camera, a confession of a drug addiction and a questionable interior design choice in the form of a very large tap in the shape of a dolphin.

Cash. John Ibrahim has a lot of it.

So much so, that he doesn’t like to be bothered with the small stuff, as police discovered while they were searching his home.

Around the time one of the videos tendered in court showed police discovering the Tic Tacs and the Viagra in the master bedroom, it also showed the officers discovered thousands of dollars in loose notes, including 100s, 50s, 20s, 10s and fives, on Ibrahim’s bedhead.

The cash was sitting among mints, hand grip strengtheners, a video game controller, a driver’s licence, a copy of Ibrahim’s autobiography and other items.

With the camera rolling, one of the officers told Ibrahim on the tendered video: “We’re not going to be seizing that but what I need you to do is collect it, count it out, be satisfied that that’s all your money and to retain that on your possession, OK.”

Ibrahim grabbed a large bundle of hundred and fifty dollar bills and folded them in a neat pile, which he put in his pocket.

Looking at more than $100 made up of 20s, fives and coins that he left on the bedhead, Ibrahim told the officer: “You can keep the shrapnel.”

The video evidence showed the officer politely declining: “I’d actually preferred if you took all of that, please.”

Ibrahim sighed and continued collecting the small notes.

But there was more.

According to the video, the officer then moved backwards and, with unintentional comedic timing, pointed to more cash that was strewn across the bedhead and the floor.

There is no suggestion John Ibrahim was involved in any illegal activity.

“There’s a five, a 20 and there’s more hundreds over here,” the officer said as he moved towards the bedroom window on the northern side of the room.

The officer then pointed Ibrahim back to the opposite side of the room: “And there’s just a 10 on the floor over there.”

With the cash seemingly all collected, the officer asked: “Is there any other cash that might be lying out and about here?”

Ibrahim replied that there wasn’t.
