This is the year of the jobseeker and your transferable skills are your golden ticket to a new role. Transferable skills are your talents, attributes, and skills, portable to different jobs, industries and careers.

For the year ending February 2022, 1.3 million people changed jobs, the highest annual job mobility rate since 2012. So how do you stand out from the crowd?

Roxanne Calder, founder and managing director of recruitment agency EST10, offers her top 5 transferable skills to acquire and master and list on your CV:

1. People skills

Interpersonal skills influence how others relate to you.

Employers love hiring people who help build relationships because they improve the working environment. They have an abundance of patience, listen intently, collaborate, and know when to push and when to hold back. They are flexible, compromise, and understand well their impact on others.

Superior interpersonal skills are relied upon in all jobs, levels and industries.

2. Communication

Potent communication requires emotional intelligence and strong self-awareness.

Much like a seventh sense, an adept communicator sees right to the core of a difficult scenario.

Expert communicators help others to be visible and heard –critical in virtual and online teams.

3. Executioner

You get things done. Ideas, innovations, and the best of plans are useless if not implemented.

Executioners are highly organised, thinking ahead and using critical thinking to foresee obstacles. They have backup plans and then another – just in case. A deadline is adhered to and taken seriously, and they are masters at holding team members accountable for their part.

4. Adaptable

Our world is guaranteed to keep changing and morphing. Adapt, adopt or not. Choose not, and you will be left behind.

5. Curiosity

Curiosity accelerates learning and knowledge while questioning supports fresh ideas.

The greater your understanding, the closer you are to being an expert with a competitive advantage.
