Cost-of-living relief or simply an election ploy?

Day one of the election campaign saw Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declare his government would make price gouging illegal in an attempt to guarantee cost-of-living relief to voters.

In a move which has left a sour taste in the mouths of many Australians, Mr Albanese said a new taskforce would be set up to advise his government on new laws – laws which have already been in place for many years in countries like the UK and the United States.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton slammed Labor’s supermarket plan as “a review” rather than action, claiming it would do little to reduce grocery prices which had risen 30 percent under the Albanese government.

The PM’s first day of campaigning could not have got off to a rockier start, with 67 per cent of voters from an online poll saying they do not support Labor’s plan to make supermarket price gouging illegal.

In fact, it is hard to find a positive comment towards the PM after this announcement.

Too little, too late

Chris

Why now? Because he wants to get re-elected, that’s the only reason. What has he done about it since he’s been in government? ZERO.

Mick M

So is this just another $275.00 cheaper lie. You have been in office for 3 years. Why have you not already done this?

Claudia

Has had an entire term of government to do something and has done diddly squat. Now he wants us to believe he will do something. He must think Australians very stupid.

What the ….!( another Rob)

Why now? Why not at any stage during the last 3 years? Too little too late. Stop treating us like fools Albo.

Empty promises

Lisa

Never forget that Albo told us last time that “His word is his bond” ... and then promptly broke the $275 power bill reduction promise, and the promise to deliver the Stage 3 tax cuts as legislated, and his promise not to make any changes to superannuation ... Any ‘promise’ or ‘pledge’ by Albo is utterly meaningless.

AndrewG

Didn’t Albo also promise a nurse in every nursing home 7 days a week?

NickOhhh

Typical deceitful Labor empty promise. Nothing more than a campaign trail sugar hit.

Focus more on energy costs

Mick M

Albo wants us to buy stuff made in Australia. Albo you have destroyed our manufacturing industry with your massive energy costs. Nobody makes anything here anymore. Nothing we can afford anymore

Stewart’s

The ACCC could not prove price gouging, and with profits in the region of 2% by both Coles and Woolies, Mr Magoo is going to waste more if our money on another government agency. Try bringing the cost of power and fuel down, that has more effect than supermarket actions.

Jim

Labor’s ridiculous energy policies are causing rising costs everywhere not just supermarkets. What a dud
