Newspoll again shows Australia is turning away from Coalition

Labor has once again come out on top in the latest Newspoll results, showing just how much ground the Coalition needs to make up ahead of May 3 if they intend to win.

Australian federal election pollster makes election prediction

Anthony Albanese heads into the final week of the election campaign with polls pointing towards Labor being able to cobble together a minority government or a skinny majority, with the party remaining ahead of the Coalition on a slim margin.

Despite that, just 39 per cent of Aussies believe Labor deserve to be re-elected, following three years of being buffeted by inflation and high interest rates.

According to Newspoll figures released on Sunday evening, the primary vote for both the Coalition and Labor remains unchanged compared to last week, with Labor sitting at 34 per cent compared to the Coalition’s primary vote of 35 per cent.

On a two-party-preferred basis, Labor’s vote bumps up to 52 per cent, compared to the Coalition at 48 per cent.

The polling spells trouble for Opposition leader Peter Dutton, with a net negative approval rating of minus 24 a new low for him, compared to the Prime Minister’s rating remaining steady at minus nine.

Mr Dutton on Sunday declared the election was still winnable, while Liberal insiders are confident that internal party polling has them in a strong position to sweep up outer suburban seats which are considered safe Labor, like Whitlam in NSW and Gorton in Victoria.

The Coalition also suffers from 62 per cent of voters remaining unconvinced they are ready to govern.

Their party’s primary vote of 35 remains five points below their peak of 40 in November.

The poll was completed of 1254 voters across the country via online interviews.
