Federal election 2025 live: Dutton’s plan to ‘turn Australia into America’
Peter Dutton has been accused of “selling out Australia” with American-style policies.
Welcome to our live coverage of the final days of the federal election campaign.
The latest and final The Australian Financial Review/Freshwater Strategy poll for the campaign predicts Anthony Albanese is on track to form a minority government – with a majority within reach – at Saturday’s election.
Meanwhile, the Coalition has revealed its plans to regulate and tax vaping with Opposition Treasury spokesman Angus Taylor saying Labor had “failed” to bring the illegal industry under control.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has accused Peter Dutton of “selling out Australia” with what he has said are American-style healthcare policies.
“He wants Australia to be like America where it’s about your credit card, not your Medicare card”.
Earlier, the Prime Minister lost his patience when questioned over Labor MP Jerome Laxale’s father, who was filmed making homophobic slurs to a Liberal volunteer.
Mr Laxale’s dad was caught on camera taunting the volunteer with homophobic language after another man can be heard taunting him if he was “proud of your son” and referencing historical claims he did not delete nude photos of a woman on his phone.
Asked by a reporter in Perth if he would speak to the MP about the matter, Anthony Albanese said he doesn’t “talk about people’s family”.
“You want me to speak to families? I want to keep families out of it,” the Prime Minister said.
Mr Laxale apologised for his father’s comments this morning, describing them as “deeply offensive and completely unacceptable”.
