Facebook users reported widespread outages on Wednesday, with the social media platform suffering random glitches.

More than 1400 reports have been submitted about the social media malfunction to website tracker Downdetector since around 3.20pm AEST on Wednesday.

Users reported dozens of random posts to celebrities, including the likes of Nicki Minaj and Adele, had popped up on their feeds from pages they were not following.

Over four in 10 users have now reported issues with the app, 40 per cent relating to the newsfeed and 16 per cent relating to the website in general.

Facebook has not yet confirmed any outage or issue with the site.

There is currently no evidence to suggest the website has been hacked.

Some users took to other social media platforms, including Twitter, to report the issue, asking Facebook to fix their feeds which had been taken over with fan mail.

Users made the most of the glitch, posting memes or taking advantage of the malfunction to gain exposure for their social media channels or promoting fundraising efforts.

As of Wednesday night, some users had reported their feed returning back to normal.

The large-scale glitch came after Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, reached a $54m settlement in the US after being accused of violating users’ privacy by tracking their movements through their smartphones without permission.

The settlement followed claims that Facebook had broken Californian law by gathering data from users who previously switched off location services on their phones.
