Coronavirus: Second wave grips globe as cases approach 36 million

A MAN is in custody after a death at a housing complex in Mornington in the early hours of Monday morning, as neighbours claim the area has been visited by police in the past.

The 31-year-old man is assisting police with the “suspicious” death of a 34-year-old man.
Police found the body at 2.50am after receiving a distress call.

A heavy police presence remained on the scene for most of the day, including forensic specialists, the criminal investigation branch and uniform officers.

A neighbour of the Carbeen St, Mornington, complex – who chose to remain anonymous – said they understood drug trafficking activity was prevalent in the area.

They also said disruption between residents and another housing complex nearby was common.

They said they had heard from other residents the dead person was “a nice fellow” with a mental disability.

Detective Inspector Rebecca Davis said a car had been towed from the scene in relation to the investigation.

Police could not confirm whether or not the man in custody was a suspect or if knew the deceased person.

“That person was taken into custody as they were providing information at the time to police and have been co-operating with our inquiries and for us to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the death,” she said.

“I would hope that we can provide the community with some further information in the coming days.”

Inspector Davis thanked the community for their co-operation and said Tasmania Police would support the family in any way they could.
